Safety Covers come in 2 different materials, Mesh & Solid.
Most people typically go with the mesh material because it is
less expensive and much lighter than the solid material. However,
the decision is yours. We have outlined the Pros & Cons
for each material below.

Solid
w/ Drain Material |
PROS
- Lightweight
- Typically 1 person can put on/take off cover
- Less expensive than solid material
- No pump needed. The water seeps through the cover. The
cover stays dry and taught. All debris on top of cover just
blows away
- You can take right off your pool and store it. There is
no need to clean the cover first
|
PROS
- Cleaner pool in the spring. No debris gets into your
water. Open a crystal clear pool in the spring
- You can close your pool in the early fall and not have
to worry about algae (green water)
- Does not allow acid rain to enter pool water - this is
great for gunite pools
- You will use less chemicals because they won't evaporate
|
PROS
- Cleaner pool in the spring with minimal cleaning required
- Water seeps into the pool through a drain panel over
the winter
- Blocks out most light - so algae growth is a lot lower
than with a traditional mesh cover
- No need to worry about a pump freezing to the cover
- You will use less chemicals because they won't evaporate
|
| CONS
- Need to chemically treat water 1-2 times during winter
depending upon weather
- Need to close pool late in the fall / open early in the
spring
- Small particles still get into your pool, some vacuuming
will be needed in the spring
- Allows light to go through the cover – this causes
algae growth if chlorine levels are not maintained
- Need a minimum amount of water in your pool during the
winter
|
CONS
- More expensive than the mesh material
- Heavier material and typically 2-3 people needed to put
on/take off cover, depending on size
- A pump is required to remove the excess water from the
cover
- The pump might freeze on top of the cover
- The pump is required for the cover to meet ASTM standards
|
CONS
- More expensive than the mesh material
- Water will be a little cloudy as rain and melting snow
wash particles into the water
- Need to check water levels periodically throughout the
winter
- Heavier material and typically 2-3 people needed to put
on/take off cover, depending on size
